There is plenty to celebrate at Watford Grammar School for Boys following the publication of their lastest Ofsted report that places the School among a very small number nationally achieving exceptional outcomes under the new inspection framework.
Inspectors visited the School on 14 and 15 April 2026 as part of Ofsted’s renewed framework, which assesses schools across eight areas using a more detailed and demanding process. Safeguarding standards were met in full, while six of the seven graded areas received the highest possible judgement of Exceptional, with the remaining area recognised at the Strong standard.
Inspectors were full of praise for both pupils and staff, commenting:
“This school is firing on all cylinders and the pupils are too. It is a place where pupils’ well-being and academic excellence go hand in hand.”
The scale of this achievement becomes even more impressive when viewed nationally. Of the 283 secondary schools inspected under the new framework so far, only 1.8% have achieved an Exceptional judgement for Curriculum and Teaching and only 2.8% for Achievement. Just five schools nationally have seen their sixth form provision awarded Exceptional.
Headmaster Mr Ian Cooksey said:
"We are truly delighted. This report provides an opportunity for celebration of the wonderful community of staff and boys at WBGS. Our phenomenal teachers have helped secure these amazing outcomes through their skill, expertise and willingness to go above and beyond to enrich the lives of our students.
However, we always retain humility. The task of educating young men in preparation for a rapidly changing world has to be responsive to new challenges, a mission we will strive to achieve."
For Old Fullerians, this achievement will feel especially meaningful. While much has changed since many alumni walked through the School gates, the values that underpin a WBGS education remain recognisable: high expectations, outstanding teaching, strong pastoral care and a commitment to helping young people thrive.
This result reflects the hard work of staff, pupils and the wider School community and gives everyone connected with WBGS another reason to feel proud of their School.
Alumni were warmly invited to join the OFA Annual Dinner on Saturday 13th January 2024. More...
